Tips for joining ThyssenKrupp

The First Time: at ThyssenKrupp.

It is said: “All beginnings are difficult” or: “Learning years are not earning years” – you will certainly have heard all these clever sayings already. Your start with us as an apprentice is a special occasion, both for you and for us. But those who remain undaunted by their new surroundings and who heed a few valuable hints will soon be on top.

We’d like to give you a few hints to make your first steps easier. So here are our five golden rules for newcomers:

Make use of the numerous information channels.

Your colleagues will always back you up! Just ask them if you’re uncertain about the company’s processes, ways or technical topics. If you listen attentively, you’ll find out a lot about ThyssenKrupp and about your work. ThyssenKrupp will offer you comprehensive information. You should also take a look at “inside”, our employee magazine, and get to know our comprehensive wealth of information on our intranet.

Establish personal contacts.

We’ve taken a decision in your favor because you are who you are. Your personality makes you unique. Also, you should find your place in our team. Try to remember the names of your colleagues and to address them personally. That helps create a positive atmosphere. You may also ask whether it is customary in your department to celebrate the start of your new job. If that is the case, don’t hesitate to do so. Also, you get to know your team better if you join them for lunch, accept private invitations and dress in a way that’s representative of your colleagues and of ThyssenKrupp.

for work – actively.

Your working day will not always be planned from morning till night. You may often find some time between two tasks. That is your opportunity: Instead of twiddling your thumbs, you can prove to the other team members that you are fully committed. Take the initiative and ask for work! That’s how you get to know new tasks, demonstrate interest, help actively and show yourself as a good colleague. That’s a good feeling!

Look beyond your own nose.

Surely you’ll know it by now: ThyssenKrupp is a global player. There’s a lot you can discover. Thus, give free reign to your spirit of discovery! Get to know what ThyssenKrupp is all about, which goals we pursue and how we are organized. It’s a bit like in a team sport. Only those can really take part in the game who know where the others run to. By the way: Once you know your way around the field, you can grow to fill other positions. After your apprenticeship, ThyssenKrupp will offer you a wealth of opportunities to develop further and to discover new perspectives. The sooner you learn about that, the better.

Improve through feedback!

Nobody’s perfect right from the start. We hired you to train you. Show your interest by asking others for feedback on your performance. Usually, you’ll receive both positive and critical feedback. Listen to the critical voices, but don’t take them personally – it’s in nobody’s interest to demotivate you.

It’s not so hard, is it? Just stay cool, calm and collected, if in doubt, don't go over the top, but always make it known that you’re here to learn. Then you’ll be a big success as an apprentice with ThyssenKrupp.
