The “Königliche Rheinisch-Westfälische Polytechnische Schule” (royal Rhine-Westphalian polytechnic institute), founded in October 1870, was awarded the coveted status of “University of Excellence” on October 19, 2007, making it one of Germany’s elite universities.
ThyssenKrupp AG and RWTH Aachen University have always enjoyed very close links. This is particularly true of the business area Steel Europe. The primary objective is to expand existing contacts and enable both parties to make use of them. Other aims include utilizing the resources available to the partners to the best possible effect with respect to
- supporting qualified students,
- further education and teaching,
- exchanging scientific findings and
- supporting university events.

Here are some of the events that help strengthen the partnership between RWTH Aachen and ThyssenKrupp:
ThyssenKrupp Award
The TK Award is presented annually to honor outstanding academic achievements. It is bestowed on students of mechanical engineering, metallurgy and materials technology, economics and industrial engineering for outstanding intermediate diploma grades.
TK meets RWTH Aachen
This get-together gives students the opportunity to find out about the world of ThyssenKrupp – in relaxed discussions with skilled and executive employees, through fascinating presentations or through interesting insights gained from the exhibits on display.
There is always something new to discover in the program, which changes each year.
Uni meets Business
This two-day event is aimed at TK Award winners and nominees. Working in groups, participants have the opportunity to present themselves and hold in-depth discussions with their mentors. The agenda also always features a “highlight activity”.
Lectures
Executives from a wide range of areas regularly deliver lecture series at the university.
Application training
Well prepared for the future – with seminars which prepare participants for job interviews and provide assistance in putting together application documents.
Activities linking theory and practice
Workshops, excursions and joint projects are organized with the objective of establishing stronger links between theory and practice. The focus is on an intensive exchange between ThyssenKrupp as a technology group and RWTH Aachen as a renowned institute of research and education.
Ice hockey Uni Cup for the ThyssenKrupp trophy
A cult event contested by the Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Medical Faculties – fun guaranteed. ThyssenKrupp is the main sponsor of this event.
The “lange Nacht der Wissenschaft” all-night science event
Many institutes open their doors and present trends in their research activities. An atmospheric and fascinating night which invites visitors to really get to know RWTH Aachen University.
Plant tours
Students are given the opportunity to get to know various subsidiaries of ThyssenKrupp AG to gain practical insights and personal experience of e.g. Blohm + Voss in Hamburg, ThyssenKrupp Drauz in Heilbronn, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe in Duisburg or ThyssenKrupp Bilstein.- Events

“ThyssenKrupp Award”
The ThyssenKrupp Award is presented every year. All nominated candidates are assigned a mentor who is a Group executive; the award winner receives an additional monthly scholarship until the end of his/her regular study period.
