Technische Universität Dresden

Dresden University of Technology (TUD) is one of Germany’s oldest and most venerable universities. Founded in 1828 as a technical school, it was raised to the status of a technical college of further education in 1890 before officially becoming a university of technology in 1961. Openness, scientific excellence and interdisciplinary cooperation are the hallmarks of the university. In the winter term 2003/2004 the TUD had around 33,000 students. 530 professors and lecturers are engaged in teaching and research; in total the TUD has more than 6,000 academic and non-academic staff. On December 3, 2001, ThyssenKrupp AG and Dresden University of Technology signed an extensive cooperation agreement. Activities under this agreement include research forums, contact fairs, plant tours, internships, application training and management games. This gives students the opportunity to get to know ThyssenKrupp as a large modern company from a variety of aspects. The background to these activities is a joint desire to attract more young people to engineering or technical degree courses, identify and support potential and intensify contacts with all ThyssenKrupp segments.

Scholarships and Awards

“ThyssenKrupp Award”

The ThyssenKrupp Award is presented every year. All nominated candidates are assigned a mentor who is a Group executive; the award winner receives an additional monthly scholarship until the end of his/her regular study period.

Activities

Here are some of the events that help strengthen the partnership between TU Dresden and ThyssenKrupp:

ThyssenKrupp Award
The TK Award is presented annually to honor outstanding academic achievements. It is bestowed on students of mechanical engineering, metallurgy and materials technology, economics and industrial engineering for outstanding intermediate diploma grades.

TK meets TU Dresden
This get-together gives students the opportunity to find out about the world of ThyssenKrupp – in relaxed discussions with skilled and executive employees, through fascinating presentations or through interesting insights gained from the exhibits on display.
There is always something new to discover in the program, which changes each year.

Uni meets Business

This two-day event is aimed at TK Award winners and nominees. Working in groups, participants have the opportunity to present themselves and hold in-depth discussions with their mentors. The agenda also always features a “highlight activity”.

Lectures

Executives from a wide range of areas regularly deliver lecture series at the university.

Application training

Well prepared for the future – with seminars which prepare participants for job interviews and provide assistance in putting together application documents.

Activities linking theory and practice

Workshops, excursions and joint projects are organized with the objective of establishing stronger links between theory and practice. The focus is on an intensive exchange between ThyssenKrupp as a technology group  and TUD as a renowned institute of research and education.

Plant tours
Students are given the opportunity to get to know various subsidiaries of ThyssenKrupp AG to gain practical insights and personal experience of e.g. Blohm + Voss in Hamburg, ThyssenKrupp Drauz in Heilbronn, ThyssenKrupp Steel in Duisburg or ThyssenKrupp Bilstein.

Application training and business games

To provide active support for their entry into professional life, ThyssenKrupp offers selected students who are close to completing their courses  the opportunity to attend an application workshop and participate in a management game (TOPSIM), which students at TUD can take as a non-technical optional course.

The management game TOPSIM (PDF) is organized on a regular basis. 40 students in 8 teams have the opportunity to take part in this year’s business management simulations. The students find out about complex interrelationships and develop business management skills in small groups.

There are also regular excustions, e.g. to the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, and career fairs at TU Dresden.

Events

The constantly updated events staged by ThyssenKrupp for TU Dresden include in particular

Joint student association excursions, plant tours and other trade shows are further examples of the successful cooperation between the university and our technology group.
