ThyssenKrupp AG
I had my first experience in the world of work during an internship at ThyssenKrupp. That was in financial management. During my studies, I spent one semester abroad in Hong Kong and followed it up with an internship in Shanghai, at a ThyssenKrupp joint venture. Although I’m still a student, I’m working part-time at ThyssenKrupp, and I’ll also start working on my graduate thesis here in the coming months.
The team gave me constant support in learning the ropes – and I was always made to feel a genuine part of the team at ThyssenKrupp despite my student status. In the departments where I was, everyone considered me a full-fledged co-worker…and I even managed to build up my own little network. By way of one of my superiors, I made it to my first internship, the one in Shanghai. And it was only after I approached my supervisor that he called my attention to a ThyssenKrupp scholarship – and I ultimately won it. It’s part of a program, actually, and I’ve now met a lot of students with whom I have a lot in common and can share ideas with. And we come from similar backgrounds, too.
What made this internship different in terms of corporate culture is the very traditional environment at ThyssenKrupp; it’s very structured, and as you’d expect, it has its hierarchies. But I do have to say that’s never been a drawback for me because it always depends how your superiors champion the culture. I haven’t had one bad experience yet. And you know, this way of doing things doesn’t detract from the company in any way or slow it down. So all in all, the corporate culture here is extremely open and dynamic.
One of the driving factors behind my decision to work for ThyssenKrupp was the particular industry ThyssenKrupp is in. For all intents and purposes, I did my vocational training in a steel company, and I knew I definitely wanted to work in manufacturing. Other driving factors were the really good experiences I’d had at ThyssenKrupp, not to mention the great offer the company made me. Plus I have my own personal reasons for staying here in Dusseldorf.
